Follow Kamui Whisky K.K.’s Founding Story.

Documenting Japan’s most northern, most remote craft whisky startup.

Our founder, Casey, transparently shares our journey to make a whisky that reflects the unique terroir of Rishiri.

Craft Whisky from the remote island of Rishiri

Japan’s northernmost distillery

Winds from the Sea of Japan

Rishiri Island is located in the northernmost part of the Japan Sea. The wind can be intense. Our whisky is aged by this salty sea wind, with our barrels matured by winds regularly exceeding 40 km/hr as they sweep over the cliffs where our distillery stands.

Kamui Spring

The Site of Kamui Whisky K.K.

As we built our distillery, we found a new spring! In the future we will blend this high-quality fresh volcanic water, which has our exact terroir, into our whiskies.

Reiho Spring

Rishiri’s Springs Rated “Best 100 Waters” in Japan

Rishiri is a volcanic island created some 900,000 years ago. Reiho is our local spring. We use its water in our distillation and bottling. It’s a “sweet” tasting water, rich in minerals. The spring slowly bubbles up through old volcanic rock, after the melting snows have spent 30+ years locked beneath the lava rock.

Kamui Genshu

Our Flavour-led Expression

Our first, un-aged expression. It has a very clean mouthfeel. Described as sweet, with an interesting nautical Finish.

The heavy salt winds have already infused Rishiri’s spirit into our Kamui Genshu. May our spirit strengthen yours.

Our Stills

Handcrafted in Kentucky by Vendome Copper & Brass Works, our stills were shipped halfway across the world to become the first American-made stills distilling Japanese whisky.

Featuring a long neck, unusual for Japanese whisky, our stills impart purity and lightness to our spirit, enhancing the distinctiveness of our single malt.
